Christodoulides ‘horrified’ by Trump shooting
President Nikos Christodoulides said on Sunday he was “horrified” by the attempted murder of former US President Donald Trump.
In a post on X, the social media platform better known as Twitter, he said he was “horrified by the attempt against former President Donald Trump’s life”.
He added he was “relieved that he is safe”, and that he sends his “best wishes to him and his family”.
“Politically motivated violence must always be unequivocally condemned and has no place in democratic societies,” he said.
Meanwhile, Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar said he was “shocked about the attack on [Trump] and condemn this attack in the strongest way possible”.
“Violence has no place in democracy. I wish Mr Trump a speedy recovery,” he added.
Trump, who is running this year to be elected as US president for the second time, was shot in the ear during a campaign rally in the early hours of Sunday morning. He was swarmed by secret service agents, before reappearing from the huddle with his face streaked in blood.
One rally attendee was killed, and two other spectators were injured, while the shooter is also dead.
Trump confirmed in a post on Truth Social, his own social media platform, that he had been shot in the upper part of his right ear, and that “much bleeding took place”.
Outside of Cyprus, the shooting was condemned by world leaders from across the globe.
A spokesperson for United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the shooting and called it an “act of political violence”, while British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said he was “appalled by the shocking scenes”.
