£190k-a-wk star has now decided to stay at Man Utd next season, Ten Hag happy to keep him - report

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire plans to remain at the club this summer, according to Daily Star.

The England international was heavily linked with an exit last summer. He was on the radar of West Ham United, but a move did not materialise as he wanted to continue at Old Trafford.

Maguire started the 2023/24 season as a regular on the bench, but he managed to impress manager Erik ten Hag in the busy end of the campaign after injuries to multiple central defenders.

The 31-year-old’s campaign ended abruptly after an injury of his own, but he has returned fully fit for pre-season and looks set to start against Rosenborg in Monday’s friendly in Norway.

Meanwhile, the former captain has made the decision to stay at United this summer. Ten Hag is also prepared to give him another chance due to his brilliant attitude and form last term.

Maguire’s current £190,000-a-week contract expires in June next year, but United have the option to prolong his stay for another 12 months through an extension clause in his deal.

United could sell Victor Lindelof instead of Maguire

Maguire’s decision to stay last summer was met with a mixed reaction from the fans, but he managed to win them over with his consistent performances during the past season.

Ten Hag was equally impressed by the former Leicester City man. He praised Maguire multiple times last season and we are not surprised by the manager’s decision to keep him.

With a clause present in his deal, United can afford to wait for another 12 months to sanction his sale.

On the other hand, it looks likely that Victor Lindelof will head for the exit door with his contract expiring next summer. He has been linked with a reunion with Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce.

United are currently close to finalising the transfer of Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich. They are also interested in pursuing another young centre-back alongside the Dutchman.

Willy Kambwala has already been sold to Villarreal and Lindelof will most likely leave if the club go on to recruit more than one central defender during the ongoing transfer window.
