US discloses identities of three American prisoners in Afghanistan

The U.S. Department of State has announced the disclosure of the names of three American citizens detained in Afghanistan.

According to The Washington Examiner on Saturday, July 13, citing a spokesperson from the U.S. Department of State, the individuals were identified as George Goldsmith, Mahmoud Habibi, and Ryan Corbett.

Reportedly, these U.S. citizens do not have access to legal representation; their charges are unspecified, they have limited contact with their families, and are held in “inhumane” conditions.

Earlier, Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Taliban administration, had stated after the third Doha meeting that two American citizens, including one man and one woman, were detained.

He emphasized that these American detainees in Afghanistan would be released as part of the exchange of prisoners from Guantanamo Bay.

According to reports, Ryan Corbett, along with Mahmoud Habibi, an Afghan-American, were detained in August 2022 along with 29 other employees of “Arya Communications,” where Habibi served as the former director of the Afghan Civil Aviation Authority. George Goldsmith was detained on December 5, 2022, in Afghanistan.

Previously, senior U.S. officials, including members of the Senate and House of Representatives, have stressed the importance of releasing American citizens from prisons in Afghanistan.

The detention of these American citizens in Afghanistan has raised significant concerns about their well-being, legal rights, and the diplomatic efforts needed to secure their release.

As international scrutiny intensifies and calls for freedom grow louder, their cases underscore ongoing challenges in navigating complex geopolitical landscapes and ensuring the protection of individuals caught during global conflicts.
