‘She shouldn’t exist’ moan Coronation Street fans as they claim actress has been ‘stitched up’ with ‘awful’ character

VIEWERS have been left annoyed with Coronation Street bosses for wasting the potential of a brilliant actress on an ‘awful’ character.

Claire Sweeney first appeared in Weatherfield as homeless drug addict Cassie Plumber in 2023.

The character managed to get her life together and got a job at the garage so she could finally get close to her son, Tyrone.

However, in recent episodes she has started to annoy viewers with her ‘arrogant’ attitude, and some have even begged for producers to axe her from the show.

Cassie lost her job at the garage when she insulted Abi Webster, saying she believed the deep fake pornography videos of her circulating online were real.

Abi’s husband Kevin was enraged to hear the accusation, as Cassie suggested her boss’s wife had just filmed the footage while high and forgotten about it.

In order to get a salary again, the mum volunteered to look after injured Ken Barlow for a fraction of the price a carer would usually charge.

After starting the job she bonded with his relative Steve McDonald, leaving fans speculating that the pair will end up dating.

But some people aren’t pleased with the idea, and have insisted that Steve deserves better.

In an online forum, one Corrie fan grumbled: “It would be nice if the writers actually made a change and did NOT pair Steve with someone that thinks they’re too good for him.

“Steve was CONSTANTLY being told ‘how lucky he was’ to have Michelle and Tracey-Luv acted in very much the same way, eventually leaving him for someone she saw as an ‘upgrade’.

“Cassie comes across as pretty arrogant where Steve is concerned. Originally telling him she only gave some time at the speed dating night because she felt sorry for him and constantly mocking him.

“Seeing Steve in a relationship where he’s ‘tolerated’ until someone better comes along is old. Especially when a character has few redeeming qualities, like Tracey-Luv and Cassie.”

Another person voiced that they wouldn’t be satisfied with Cassie just not ending up with Steve; they want her axed from Weatherfield altogether.

They wrote: “God forbid. I just want her gone for good.”

A third raged: “Cassie is a mistake, she shouldn’t exist. Claire Sweeney has been stitched up and given a character that was invented out of thin air and is simply awful to boot.”
