BCCI Allocates Rs one Crore for Gaekwad’s Cancer Treatment

MUMBAI: The BCCI decided on Sunday to donate Rs one crore for the treatment of former India coach Anshuman Gaekwad, who is fighting blood cancer at a London hospital, in a commendable gesture.

The decision by the BCCI was made in response to passionate pleas for assistance made by former captain Kapil Dev and Sandip Patil, who urged the cricket body to assist Gaikwad.

“Mr. Jay Shah has instructed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to release Rs 1 crore with immediate effect to provide financial assistance to India’s veteran cricketer Mr Anshuman Gaekwad, who is battling cancer,” the apex council of the BCCI stated in a statement

Gaekwad is receiving treatment for blood cancer at King’s College Hospital in London. He is the son of former India captain D K Gaekwad.

In an effort to assess the circumstances and offer assistance, Shah has also met with Mr. Gaekwad’s family. The board will do all is necessary to ensure Mr. Gaekwad’s speedy recovery and stands with his family during this difficult time, the statement said.

“The BCCI will continue to monitor Mr Gaekwad’s progress and is confident that he will come out of this phase strongly,” it stated.

Gaekwad, now 71, represented India in 40 Test matches and 15 One-Day Internationals [ODI] from 1975 to 1987.
