I’d never even heard of Gogglebox before meeting my ex but months later I was on the hit Channel 4 show
A FORMER Gogglebox star has opened up about how he suddenly found himself on the show after he started dating his ex.
Although it might be hard to imagine Gogglebox as a niche show now, Daniel Lustig insists that 11 years ago, it was a small series with “a very cult viewing”.
When speaking about his time on the Channel 4 reality series, he admitted that he hadn’t even heard of it before he met Stephen Webb.
Daniel’s former husband originally joined the very first Gogglebox lineup in 2013 with his ex boyfriend, Chris Ashby-Steed.
After that Stephen featured on the show alongside his mum Pat Webb, who was then replaced by Daniel in 2019.
In an exclusive interview with the Sun, Daniel shared: “When I met Stephen he’d only just done the pilot. I’d never even watched it.
“We went away for his birthday, and he said, ‘Oh I’m going to be on this TV show.’
“I asked, ‘What TV show?’ And he told me about it. He showed me a few bits on the internet.
“Gogglebox wasn’t even massive then. It aired on a Wednesday at around nine or ten at night.
“It had a very cult viewing – lots of students. After we started dating I did watch it a couple of times.
“It was a completely different show then – there was swearing.”
Daniel also opened up about what it was like experiencing the public’s perception of him as he joined a reality show for the first time and had some of his private life exposed for the world to see.
He added: “In the beginning I would read comments and tweets. Obviously I’ve never been on telly before and you do you get nosy and you want to know what people are saying about you.
“People were saying, ‘Oh he laughs a lot, he’s very cute’ and then people go, ‘Is he drunk?’
“So after a while I stopped reading comments. But I do read them now. People are really sweet and generally 99.9% of people are lovely.”
Daniel recently revealed that he is looking for love again after he and Stephen filed for divorce.
He shared: “I did download Tinder but I haven’t put a profile on there yet. I don’t know if I’m really confident.”
“Hopefully I’ll meet someone off the cuff! At a wedding or on the home lawns walking my dogs. Babs definitely has an eye for hot guys on the lot.”
