Bentancur had to come off with an injury in the first half of Uruguay’s loss against Colombia in the Copa America semi-final on Wednesday.

The midfielder was reportedly in tears when he walked off the pitch (El Observador), which led to concerns that the injury might have been serious.

Thankfully, that was the case, with the 27-year-old completing a swift recovery to start again for Uruguay in the third-place playoff and he opened the scoring for his side with a lovely swivel and finish after the ball was knocked down to him from a corner.

The game eventually finished 2-2 and went to a shootout, with the Tottenham man stepping up and scoring the second spot-kick as Uruguay ran out 4-3 winners.

Spurs fans will be hoping the former Juventus star is fit and ready to start the new season, with Bentancur having been one of Tottenham’s best players before his long-term injury.

The midfielder will have to compete with the likes of Yves Bissouma, James Maddison, Pape Matar Sarr, Oliver Skipp, Lucas Bergvall, and Archie Gray for minutes next season.

Firstly, it is great news for Tottenham that Bentancur’s knock was not serious as the midfielder could not have afforded another injury setback.

The touch, swivel and finish for his goal was masterful as the 27-year-old showed again that he can be a big goal threat inside the box.
