United sign Dutch striker for £36.5m

Manchester United have signed Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna for £36.54 million. The 23-year-old has agreed to a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with an option for an additional 12 months.

Zirkzee’s Bologna contract had a release clause of 40 million euros (£33.6 million), but United chose to pay a slightly higher price to spread the payment over three years to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Zirkzee is the first player to join the club since Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquired a 27.7% stake in the club last December.

He scored 12 goals in 37 appearances last season, helping Bologna secure an unexpected spot in this season’s Champions League. However, there are question marks over how ready or suitable he is to make the adjustment to United’s first team, given he is below former loanee striker Wout Weghorst in pecking order for his country.
