Man killed at Trump rally was former fire chief who ‘died a hero’

The rally attendee who was fatally shot in an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump was identified Sunday by Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

Corey Comperatore was a former fire chief from the area who loved his family, Shapiro said.

“Corey died a hero. Corey dove on his family to protect them last night,” the governor said.

Comperatore was the ex-chief of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company in Butler County, where Saturday’s rally was held.

In a Facebook post, his sister, Dawn Comperatore Schafer, said he had shielded his daughters from the gunshots.

“He was a hero that shielded his daughters,” she said. “His wife and girls just lived through the unthinkable and unimaginable. My baby brother just turned 50 and had so much life left to experience. Hatred has no limits and love has no bounds.”

“Yesterday time stopped. And when it started again my family and I started living a real-life nightmare,” said Corey Comperatore’s daughter, Allyson, in a separate Facebook post.

Allyson Comperatore said her father quickly threw her and her mom to the ground when the shots rang out, shielding them from a bullet.

“He truly loved us enough to take a real bullet for us,” she said. And I want nothing more than to cry on him and tell him thank you.”

A GoFundMe to help Comperatore’s family had raised more than $151,000 by early Sunday afternoon.
