He is understood to have died at HMP Wandsworth, South London, on Friday, despite efforts to revive him.

Arter was remanded in custody at Westminster magistrates’ court on Wednesday, charged with misconduct in public office over claims he had inappropriate contact with a victim of crime.

He had worked on a unit dealing with rape victims.

Arter was due to appear at Woolwich crown court next month.

He was sacked for gross misconduct in May last year — after over six years suspension on full pay — for taking drugs and offering to supply them at swingers’ parties.

The Prison Service confirmed his death.

A Prisons Service spokesman said: “Warren Arter died at HMP Wandsworth on Friday 12th July.

“As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate.”

A Met Police spokeswoman added: “We are aware of the death of former Met officer Warren Arter in prison.

“Our sympathies are with his family.”
