Six smart changes to slash your water bills and save cash

ANOTHER day, another price hike for households.

Industry regulator Ofwat has just announced that water bills will increase by an average of £19 annually over the next five years.

So it is worth making some smart changes now, especially for those on a meter whose bills are linked to the amount of water they use.

CASH LEAK: A dripping tap or running toilet flush might seem insignificant, but these leaks can waste gallons of water daily.

It is important to regularly inspect your plumbing for leaks — and fix them promptly.

A small investment in repairs now can prevent a rise in your water bills later.

RAIN IT IN: Collecting rainwater is an excellent way to save on costs.

Installing a water butt under your gutter will allow you to collect rain, which can then be used for the garden and lawn without turning on the tap.

A QUICK SHOWER: Try taking a shower that lasts less than ten minutes, to use less water.

According to Thames Water, shaving just two minutes off your shower time saves two buckets of water each day.

Why not set a timer, or shower to a specific song to help reduce your water consumption?

TIMELY ADVICE: Watering your lawn and garden during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening, can reduce evaporation and ensures more water reaches the roots.

FULLY LOADED: When using your washing machine or dishwasher, make sure you run full loads.

This maximises the efficiency of appliances and reduces your use of them, saving both water and energy.

TURN IT OFF: Simple habits such as turning off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving can save a substantial amount of water.

Encourage everyone in your household to watch their water use and to turn off taps when no water is needed.
