Trump seeks to expoit assassination attempt for political gain

American media reports have termed the unsuccessful assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump as a “historic moment,” a brief instance where Trump narrowly escaped death.

Had he not moved a few millimetres just seconds before the shooting, this historic moment could have turned into a tragedy for America.

The Wall Street Journal, in an editorial published on Sunday, July 14th, examined widespread reactions to the assassination attempt. The editorial indicates that thanks to this “historic moment,” Trump will no longer pose “a potential threat to democracy,” and Democrats have lost the freedom to “disseminate hatred” against Trump.

The authors of this editorial, referring to the recent increase in “political and hate-filled hostility” in America, wrote that “the attempt on Donald Trump’s life on Saturday evening was a terrifying moment for America and could have been very tragic; however, it cannot be said that this incident was entirely surprising.”

Trump’s previous characterization as a “threat” to democracy had been widely accepted propaganda, not only by American Democratic officials but also acknowledged in unofficial meetings by leaders and officials of other countries.

However, following the assassination attempt on Saturday evening, Joe Biden, President of the United States, and other world leaders condemned it as “political violence.” According to the authors, the issue here is that if these statements and condemnations do not change behavior, they will have no effect.

The introduction of Trump as a potential threat considered a winning strategy for Democrats in the election rhetoric, was not true. The authors of The Wall Street Journal have written: “If one of the candidates is elected, democracy will not end, and if Trump wins, fascism will not prevail unless we have little faith in American institutions.”

The former US Attorney General also stated in his statement: “Democrats must stop their irresponsible statements that Trump is an existential threat to democracy. He is not.”

On the other hand, Trump has also altered his election plans and speech texts after the assassination attempt on Saturday, seeking to make better use of this “historic moment.”
