WFP identifies greenhouse gas emissions as a climate change factor

The World Food Programme emphasizes that Afghanistan is the sixth most climate-vulnerable country globally, with greenhouse gas emissions recognized as a contributing factor.

On Sunday, July 14th, via its X page, the organisation stated that deadly floods in northern Afghanistan over the past two months have catalysed climate change impacts.

According to the World Food Programme, more than a hundred people lost their lives due to recent floods in Balkh province, and thousands of homes were either completely or partially destroyed.

Previously, the organization had warned about continued poverty in Afghanistan, citing increased famine risks stemming from climate change as a humanitarian crisis in the country.

According to WFP, the necessary budget to support tens of thousands affected by recent floods in Afghanistan is unavailable, requiring $600 million for aid and improving their conditions.

The situation in Afghanistan underscores the urgent need for international support to address the growing humanitarian crisis exacerbated by climate change impacts, particularly in the wake of devastating floods and ongoing poverty challenges.
