It comes as execs at the broadcaster slashed Hollyoaks to just three episodes a week and pulled it from the main channel.

And now one of its longest-serving stars Jennifer Metcalfe has dropped a teaser for the next era of the show.

The actress, 40, revealed stunts the show has ‘never done before’ in an exclusive chat with The Sun at the Radio Times soap awards.

Jennifer said: “Do you know what, we’re just filming the last lot of the five episodes and the start of the three episodes.

“I’ve never felt so excited about Hollyoaks – how it’s wrapping it up is like something we’ve never done before and how it’s introducing the ‘new show’ as I call it is just unbelievable.”

Jennifer added: “You’ll see characters in a position where you’ve never seen them before, like literally ever.

“I think we’ve had times over the last 20 years with Mercedes where I’ve gone ‘oh I’ve not done this before, I’ve not explored this avenue and it is just I haven’t but to this depth with my character is going to be something different.

“Personally as an actor I can’t wait to smash it.”

The mum-of-one also paid tribute to co-stars who have been axed, including Stephanie Waring who played Cindy Cunningham.

Jennifer said: “It’s been a really sad time, not just cast but crew as well. There’s been massive changes in the crew, probably more so than the cast and because I’ve been there for 20 years I’ve felt probably more from the crew going than the cast going.

“They’ve been my family for 20 years and it’s been really heavy there, it hasn’t been easy at all but we are all pulling together.

“The people that are leaving we are fully supportive of their journey and everyone that’s left we’re like ‘come on, what are we gonna make of this now’.”
