The Celtics reportedly want to see more of Ron Harper Jr.

Boston last Monday revealed it awarded a Summer League roster spot to Harper, who spent the last two seasons in the Toronto Raptors organization. Less than one week later, Spotrac’s Keith Smith reported the Celtics signed Harper to a non-guaranteed training camp contract.

The 24-year-old has logged minimal NBA experience since going undrafted out of Rutgers in 2022. Harper played a combined 10 games with the Raptors between the last two campaigns and ultimately was waived by Toronto in early December of last year.

At this point, the New Jersey native’s biggest claim to fame is being the son of a decorated former NBA player. Ron Harper was an All-American at Miami (Ohio) and was selected eighth overall in the 1986 draft before winning five championships across a 15-year career. A reliable guard, Harper won three straight titles with Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls and back-to-back with the Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal-led Los Angeles Lakers.

The younger Harper now is on a mission to make a name for himself at basketball’s highest level. But it will be difficult to do so in Boston, where the Celtics are set to have a star-studded and well-built roster for the next few seasons.
