Former tennis player Mardy Fish, a legend on the celebrity golf circuit, took home the hardware Sunday at Lake Tahoe, but the boys of summer were well represented. John Smoltz, Derek Lowe and Mark Mulder all earned top-10 finishes. Joe Mauer and Kevin Millar found a way into the top 20, and Chase Utley, Albert Pujols and Roger Clemens played respectable golf over the weekend.

A-Rod, meanwhile, struggled just a little bit. There were 90 celebs in the field, and FOX News host withdrew after the second round. Of the 89 players who finished the tournament, all but one scored better than Rodriguez. The polarizing baseball superstar finished with a score of minus-59, which might sound borderline historic when talking about a golf score, but the tournament famously uses Stableford scoring in which players are awarded points for better scores. Fish, for example, finished with a score of 83, meaning he beat Rodriguez by 142 points.

More golf

Only NBC News meteorologist Dylan Dreyer finished with a worse score.

Rodriguez shot 106, 93 and 97 over the three rounds, giving him a 296 for the weekend … or 80-over par. As you might expect, that included some humbling moments for the man who hit 696 career home runs. The worst (also, most relatable) might have come on what looked like a pretty simple approach shot from just off the fairway. Unfortunately for A-Rod, he shanked his shot, and it sure sounds like the ball ricocheted off a tree before coming back at Rodriguez before coming to rest a few yards away from him.

To his credit, Rodriguez was able to make fun of himself on social media.

Rodriguez sure isn’t the first nor will he be the last titan of sport or industry to be humbled by golf. At least he looked the part, though.
