Shawnee County election commissioner discusses upcoming primary election

TOPEKA (KSNT) - Shawnee County Election Commissioner Andrew Howell joined the 27 News Morning Show to discuss the 2024 primary election.

Howell reminds residents that July 16 is the registration deadline to participate in the August primary election. On Wednesday, advance mail ballots will be sent out. The deadline for advance mail ballots is at midnight on July 30.

Early voting will begin next Monday with office hours from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays. The last day of early voting will be Aug. 5 at noon. The last day to submit early ballots will be at 7 p.m. on Aug. 6 at the election office or at any polling place.

"So there's enough time, even if you've got work or you're going to be late at work, you still have plenty of time to get by the election office," Howell said.

Primary election polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. on Aug. 6. To view the full 2024 primary election calendar, click here.

27 News asked about a public test being held on July 30.

"State law requires that the public be able to see the equipment to make sure that the actual tabulation is working correctly, I encourage people, I always do and always have, I think it’s important for people to see that," Howell said.
