'Kittens in the library' returns to Georgetown

The "Kittens in the Library" event will return to the Georgetown Public Library on July 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

GEORGETOWN, Texas (KXAN) -- Georgetown is bringing back a popular animal adoption event at the library later this month after seeing success in past years.

The "Kittens in the Library" event will return to the Georgetown Public Library on July 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The library is located at 402 West Eighth Street.

Kittens from the Georgetown Animal Shelter will be at the library ready to find their new homes. Adoption fees are $35 during the event, and kittens will be able to leave directly from there. Cardboard carriers will be provided.

The Georgetown Animal Shelter is the municipal animal shelter for the city and takes in all stray and surrendered animals from within the city limits, according to a release.

The shelter said it has maintained a save rate of 90% or more, giving it a no-kill shelter status, for ten years this October.

The animal shelter said Monday it currently has many kittens and cats, and staff hopes the event at the library will help them find new homes. In past years, 20-25 kittens were adopted during the event.

Central Texas shelter capacity issues

According to Chewy, a pet food and product retailer, summer is usually a busy season for animal shelters due to several factors, like kitten season, July Fourth fireworks, and in recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic.

Central Texas shelters, including another in Williamson County, have experienced higher intake rates over the summer, prompting some of them to take creative approaches to getting them cleared.

The Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter last week utilized a popular song and social media trend to promote a dog adoption event, where dogs were free to adopt through the weekend. The shelter said Monday the event was a huge success and 40 dogs were adopted, plus 21 went to foster homes.

WCRAS has struggled with high capacity for the last few years and regularly holds adoption specials to combat those struggles.

The Austin Animal Center currently has its intake temporarily closed except for emergencies (life-threatening illness or injury, or clear risk to public safety).

AAC said it took in 66 dogs and 47 cats between July 2 and 7. In this period, 74 dogs and 113 cats were moved out of the shelter via adoption, returning to owner, transfer and foster homes.

The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter took in 19 dogs between July 5 and 7. Seven of those dogs had been reclaimed by their owners by the 8th, according to the shelter.
