Giddy Ups closing south Austin bar, hoping to relocate after lease change

The business is looking for a new space to move to and plans to hold an "Out With A Bang" party to celebrate.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A local bar that calls itself "The Biggest Little Stage in South Austin" will close soon after lease changes, the venue announced on social media.

The south Austin saloon said it will close in early August after a change in lease ownership. But the business is looking for a new space to move to and plans to hold an "Out With A Bang" party to celebrate.

"We're not happy about leaving. This whole situation feels more like a 'yeehaw, out of here' than a genuine step forward for the neighborhood," a statement read in part. "We call it gentrification and an unsatisfiable act of greed, you might call it progress – whatever the label, it means losing a piece of that "living room extension" vibe as neighborhood bar and concert venue, that Nancy M. Morgan built – simply a place where you can come as a stranger and leave as a friend."

The bar was opened by Nancy Morgan, who died after a cancer battle.

According to reporting from the Austin Business Journal, a Buda bar plans to open a bar at the current Giddy Ups location on Menchaca Road.

KXAN reached out to Giddy Ups for an update on their future. This article will be updated if information is received.
