2024 Emmy Experts predict Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor: Robert Downey Jr. (‘The Sympathizer’) out front

Having trouble predicting who will win Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor at the upcoming Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and the majority of them believe the trophy will go to Robert Downey Jr. (“The Sympathizer”). The other potential nominees, per the Experts’ current racetrack odds, are Jonathan Bailey (“Fellow Travelers”), John Hawkes (“True Detective: Night Country”), Lewis Pullman (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Joe Keery (“Fargo”) and Treat Williams (“Feud: Capote vs. the Swans”).

As of this writing, 15 out of our 18 Emmy Experts predict a victory for Downey for “The Sympathizer”: Ben Travers (Indiewire), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Clayton Davis (Variety), Dave Nemetz (TVLine), Eric Deggans (NPR), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Kelly Lawler (USA Today), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox), Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby), Thelma Adams (Gold Derby) and Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV). He plays various villainous roles, all representing the American establishment, on HBO’s adaptation of the award-winning 2015 novel “The Sympathizer” by Viet Thanh Nguyen. Downey is a prior Emmy nominee for “Ally McBeal” (2001) and he just recently won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer” (2023).

Two other Emmyologists — Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine) and Susan King (Gold Derby) — instead believe Bailey will prevail for “Fellow Travelers.” He recently prevailed at the Critics Choice Awards as congressional staffer Tim Laughlin, the secret lover of Matt Bomer‘s Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller, in the Showtime period piece. The English actor’s prior claim to fame was “Bridgerton,” which nabbed him an ensemble SAG Award nomination in 2021.

Finally, Keith Simanton (IMDb) stands alone in predicting a victory for Hawkes for “True Detective: Night Country,” in which he plays the complicated Captain Hank Prior opposite Jodie Foster‘s Chief Liz Danvers. While the “Deadwood” actor has never received an Emmy nomination, he has been nominated at the Oscars for “Winter’s Bone” (2010) and at the Critics Choice Awards for “The Sessions” (2012).

Also looking strong in our pundits’ rankings is Pullman for “Lessons in Chemistry.” The relative newcomer has already been nominated for this project at the Critics Choice Awards and Independent Spirit Awards for his role as chemist Calvin Evans, the love interest of Brie Larson‘s Elizabeth Zott, in Apple TV+’s popular limited series.

Some of the most recent Emmy winners in the Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor category include Paul Walter Hauser (“Black Bird”) in 2023, Murray Bartlett (“The White Lotus”) in 2022, Evan Peters (“Mare of Easttown”) in 2021, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (“Watchmen”) in 2020 and Ben Whishaw (“A Very English Scandal”) in 2019. Find out who will be in the running to join this esteemed list when the Primetime Emmy nominations are announced on July 17, 2024.
