'Belongs in a Roadrunner cartoon': RNC viewers crack up over 'comically large' prop

As MAGA leaders broke for recess Monday afternoon at the Republican National Convention, a prop caught the attention of the internet — a rather robust gavel.

The first day of the convention resulted in a slew of headlines. Former President Donald Trump officially won enough delegates to become the party's presumptive nominee, he finally revealed his much-anticipated vice presidential pick and questions swirled among which Trump child was not present.

And heading into the evening, Chairman Michael Whatley declared the national convention was in recess, "subject to the call of the chair."

It was at that moment he grabbed what appeared to be a gavel so large he had to hold it half-way up its shaft, not unlike a tee-ball player using a slightly-too-elongated baseball bat.

And amidst chatter over "unity," "J.D. Vance" and "Project 2025," the gavel appeared to steal the show for many.

"The gavel at the @GOP convention is size-Mjölnir," wrote @dreamlessod on X. "100% certain somebody is using that as a joinery mallet this weekend!"

Mjölnir, for the uninitiated, is the hammer of the thunder god Thor in Norse mythology.

"My favorite thing about the RNC so far has been the comically large gavel," wrote @BerlinoNicole."But then the (twice) failed JD chant really brightened my day In the interest of unity, I hope whoever wins signs an executive order banning all gavels smaller than the average human head."

"Sweet gavel," said @TheUrbanMonk321. "I heard there was music?"

Earlier in the night, "=@itisNilDesperan quipped "That gavel looks inflatable and belongs in a Roadrunner cartoon [smiling face with open mouth and tightly closed eyes emoji] and is befitting this occasion.
