Texas politicians attend Republican convention, days after attempted Trump assassination

Just a couple days after an assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump, security is top of mind as the Republican National Convention kicks off today in Milwaukee.

AUSTIN (NEXSTAR)— Just a couple days after an assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump, security is top of mind as the Republican National Convention kicks off Monday in Milwaukee.

The attempted assassination not only rocked the Republican party but emboldened it. Multiple Texas representatives and senators are in Milwaukee this week for the convention.

"The events this weekend have really galvanized the Republicans, and think they're going to turn out in mass," Sen. Paul Bettencourt, R-Houston, said.

There's a sense of unity and reinvigoration, after Trump got shot, as well as rally attendees killed and badly hurt.

"It's a miracle that he didn't, that they didn't kill him," Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said. "And I think there's a real appreciation that we have a nominee like him."

Some opted out of going to the convention, while others are using this as an opportunity to speak out about what they think should happen moving forward.

"We have to get questions answered...why was someone within 130 yards of the [former] president of the United States with what seemingly was a direct shot?" Congressman Pete Sessions, R-Texas, said.

NBC News reports the secret service didn't change any of its security plans ahead of the convention this week, saying its confident in plans already in place, despite the assassination attempt.

Some representatives hope now, what happened might lead to more listening and common ground.

"I hope it brings our country together... we have less vitriolic between the two parties," Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller said. "I hope we can just talk issues. That's what matters for the people."

Trump announced Ohio Sen. JD Vance as his running mate on Monday.

"A great decision by President Trump. President Trump and his VP Vance will Make America Great Once Again and unify our nation. America’s future looks brighter with their leadership," Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement on social media.
