Today’s weather will make you check the calendar to see if it’s really July

There are still Met Office yellow weather warnings for rain in place across almost the whole country.

We’re exactly half way through July and thank god for everyone having calendars on our phones, as we wouldn’t know it otherwise.

Today is going to be another soggy day for many, with weather warnings of rain covering much of the country.

People from Aberdeen to Portsmouth have been warned of heavy rain, flooding, and possibly even thunder, with yellow warnings spanning the length of the UK.

Those in Wales and the South West were spared the worst of it, though they get enough rain on other days they deserve a day off.

The worst of the weather will come in the early morning, so take care while commuting, take a brolly and leave your white trainers at home.

After 9am, once people are sat inside at their desks, things will ease off, though there is still likely to be rain the afternoon.

The Met Office forecast for Tuesday says: ‘Rain across parts of England and Wales clearing east during the morning.

‘Sunny spells and scattered showers follow for many, these heavy in places. Breezier in the south and east.’

It comes after a day of downpours yesterday, matching the national mood after England was defeated by Spain in the final of Euro 2024.

Last week wasn’t much better, with other weather warnings in place on June 12 for thunderstorms and torrential rain.

This month has seen many of us complain about the cold, with thunder and rain only making conditions feel chillier.

The month of May being the hottest on record, but even that didn’t feel especially summery as it was also wet and the high temperatures were partly due to warmer nights.

And if you’re superstitious, we have some bad news.

Yesterday was also St Swithin’s day, July 15. According to folklore, the weather on that day dictates the weather for the next 40 days.

The proverb of St Swithin says: ‘St Swithin’s Day if thou dost rain, for forty days it will remain, St Swithin’s Day if thou be fair, for forty days will rain na mair.’

It rained a lot yesterday, so… with this bad omen, it might be time to start looking at ferry tickets to have your summer holiday in France instead?

The Met Office did reassure us that since the start of records in 1861 this ’40 days of rain’ after St Swithin’s hasn’t actually happened.
