India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar emphasized the foundational role of people-to-people connections in India’s relationship with Afghanistan during an interview with Kazinform News Agency in Astana, Kazakhstan.

He underscored India’s commitment to supporting Afghan people through humanitarian aid, including food, essential medicines, and pesticides.

Jaishankar highlighted the historical ties between India and Afghanistan, noting that these connections are the bedrock for bilateral relations.

He pointed out that India has been addressing concerns raised during the SCO summit over several years, focusing on development, humanitarian assistance, capacity building, and sports initiatives to impact Afghanistan society positively.

Regarding India’s assistance efforts, Jaishankar mentioned that India continues to supply medicines to Afghanistan hospitals, acknowledging the country’s critical shortage of medical supplies.

He also mentioned India’s provision of wheat to address food shortages exacerbated by recent challenges like locust attacks, alongside supplying pesticides to combat agricultural threats.

Reflecting on the recent SCO summit held in Astana, Jaishankar echoed the sentiment shared by leaders of SCO member countries, emphasizing the importance of establishing an inclusive government in Afghanistan to achieve sustainable peace.

Meanwhile, the foreign minister of India reiterated that India’s approach towards Afghanistan remains centered on enhancing people-to-people ties and providing essential support to address humanitarian needs and foster socio-economic development.

He emphasized that India’s commitment to Afghanistan’s stability and prosperity will continue to guide its diplomatic efforts and engagements in the region.
