At least 15 people have been injured in a dramatic accident after a bus rolled over on a highway in northeast Spain.

Footage from a helicopter shows the coach blocking the tunnel on the C32 highway about an hour north of Barcelona at a 45 degree angle.

The position of the bus appears to suggest it hit the curved ceiling of the tunnel as it was entering, before it vaulted upwards, leaving it perched diagonally across the entrance.

Video clips show drivers getting out of their vehicles and rushing towards to help passengers trapped inside.

Photos circulating on social media show several people crouching over a man, who is believed to be wounded, laying on the asphalt.

The incident happened near the coastal town of Pineda de Mar, about 30 miles outside of Barcelona, on Tuesday morning.

Two people who were initially trapped are in a ‘very serious condition’, local media reported.

The coach was transporting 60 Inditex textile workers from Barcelona to their facilities in Tordera.

Some 14 units and two medical helicopters were deployed by Catalan authorities.

Firefighters have since rescued all people inside, but are still battling to extract the driver.

A statement said: ‘The passengers have already been evacuated from the crashed bus on the C-32 in La Pineda and we are working to extract the driver.

‘We have expanded the operation for this accident with 24 crews and two helicopters with rescue units.’

It has not been established how the bus flipped over to land right across the entry of the tunnel.

The C-32 is now closed northbound, with multiple vehicles now stranded on the highway. Traffic is being diverted via the Calella exit 122.
