Donald Trump was officially nominated as the Republican Party’s candidate for the 2024 U.S. elections on the first day of the national convention in Milwaukee. He selected JD Vance, a Republican senator from Ohio, as his running mate.

Trump wrote on his social media account, Truth Social, stating, “JD will continue to fight for the Constitution as Vice President. He will stand beside our military forces and assist me in restoring America’s greatness.”

The Republican Party convention takes place amidst heightened security measures to protect Trump and the convention. Security levels around Senator Vance have also been increased following his nomination as Vice Presidential candidate.

Donald Trump was targeted in an unsuccessful assassination attempt on Sunday, Tuesday, 14th July. Thomas Matthew Crooks, who shot Trump from a rooftop, was killed by security forces moments after the incident. The motives behind his actions at the age of just 20 remain unclear.

The White House emphasized they were not aware of the reasons that prompted Crooks to commit this act.

Joe Biden and his administration, along with prominent figures from both the Democratic and Republican parties, have condemned this assassination attempt and called for calm in the country.

The Republican Party convention spans four days, setting the stage for the complete American political landscape to be addressed.

Hours before Donald Trump introduced JD Vance as his running mate, reports indicated that campaign officials had contacted Marco Rubio, a prominent Republican senator from Florida, and Doug Burgum, the governor of North Dakota, informing them they would not be the nominee for Vice President.

JD Vance, a newcomer to American politics, has strong conservative views and is intellectually closer to Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., expressing regret later for his sharp criticism of Trump during the 2016 presidential election.

Vance has been active in Trump’s election campaign, involved in electoral battles and fundraising efforts alongside the former president. In a podcast in May, he told his close friend Donald Trump Jr. that if asked to serve as Donald Trump’s deputy, he would do anything to help the former president’s election campaign.
