Mason Greenwood AGREES Man Utd transfer exit after striking deal to join Marseille in £27m move

MASON GREENWOOD has agreed to join Marseille as he nears an exit from boyhood club Manchester United.

The two clubs have agreed an initial fee of £27million plus £3.2m in add-ons and a significant sell-on clause.

The Ligue 1 side already had a deal in place with their Premier League counterparts, which was subject to Greenwood’s approval.

That has now arrived in verbal form and work continues in an effort to finalise the move, according to David Ornstein.

Greenwood will undergo a medical in France and must put pen to paper before the proposed transfer can be considered complete.

His Marseille contract will run until June 2029 and reportedly includes a significant 50 per cent sell-on clause.

Marseille reached an agreement with United to sign Greenwood last week after fending off competition from a number of European clubs led by Lazio.

Greenwood returned to United’s training ground on Monday to hold talks with the club chiefs to help facilitate an exit from Old Trafford.

The Englishman attracted interest from a host of European clubs after a season-long loan spell with Getafe last term.

The winger scored 10 goals in 36 appearances for the Spanish outfit and was awarded the club’s Player of the Season.

The deal was completed despite protest from Marseille fans against the move.

A section of supporters launched a #GreenwoodNotWelcome campaign over allegations of attempted rape and assault against the 22-year-old.

Marseille mayor Benoit Payan has also opposed the move, saying he would lobby the club’s president Pablo Longoria to call off the deal.

The mayor told RMC: “I do not want my club to be covered in shame. It is not acceptable.”

Greenwood has denied any wrongdoing and all charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service last year.

The move to Marseille sees Greenwood work under former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, who joined the club in June.

Greenwood made his debut for the Red Devils in 2019 and scored 35 goals in 129 appearances.
