Best-selling car brand changes name of popular motor after 30 years  – sparking nightmare if you want to sell

A BEST-SELLING car brand has changed the name of one of its most popular models – sparking a nightmare if you want to sell one.

The firm has ditched three decades of naming precedent for its new lineup of EVs.

Audi has unveiled its latest electric model in the form of the all-new A5.

The model is a refresh of the existing A4 executive car, featuring some updated tech and minor exterior tweaks.

These include a slightly longer wheelbase and reduced boot size to improve styling and handling.

There will also be a new saloon variant added – a fastback-style luxury motor related to the Skoda Octavia.

The A5 will incorporate mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrains – but that presents an unforeseen issue.

The manufacturer, which is the third largest in the UK as of 2023, has decided to reconfigure its model naming structure.

The change means that EVs will be differentiated from petrol and diesel vehicles by the number in their name.

Anything using an internal combustion engine, including hybrids, can only use odd numbers while evens will be reserved for the all-electric range.

So while the new A5 is a hybrid version of the A4, it cannot be called that.

Likewise, there is set to be a fully electric version too, which will have to be called the A6.

In turn, that will knock the current petrol A6 off its perch, leaving it renamed as the A7.

So when petrolheads try and buy a used Audi in the next couple of years, it might get a bit tricky to know exactly what you’re getting for your money.

It comes after a top manufacturer returned to the UK for the first time in three years after a previous model was banned for being too loud.

Meanwhile, a one-off “wagon” built for one of the world’s wealthiest monarchs is set to sell at a massive price – despite being used for a very mundane job in recent years.
