‘One of the best’ – National media hail Spurs star for another ‘flawless’ display
The Argentine media’s affection for Cristian Romero has entered a whole new level after the centre-back helped his nation retain the Copa America trophy.
Cristian Romero wins yet another international trophy
Romero and his teammates made history at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, overcoming Colombia 1-0 in extra time to retain the Copa America title, which they also won three years ago.
Lionel Scaloni has his defence to thank for the title, having conceded just one goal all tournament – in the quarterfinal against Ecuador.
Romero, who has emerged as the leader of the Albiceleste, has been praised to high heavens by the Argentine press all tournament, and the appreciation of the centre-back entered fever pitch on the back of his display in the final.
It was a tight encounter which ended goalless after 90 minutes but Lautaro Martinez, who came on as a substitute on 97 minutes along with Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, proved the difference between the two sides, with the Inter Milan star netting the match-winner on 112 minutes.
Cristian Romero receives more rave reviews
The media could not stop raving about Romero, with Infobae giving him a nine out of 10 and claiming that he showed once again that he is one of the best defenders in the world.
They wrote: “Another exceptional performance by the man who is now one of the best defenders in the world and in the history of the Argentine national team.
“Practically flawless. Set the standard for holding out every set-piece against him and even almost converting one in his own favour.”
La Nacion were also full of praise for the Spurs star, writing about the 26-year-old: “A lion, untamed. It was Cuti’s Copa America. Against a very physical opponent, he was once again a bastion. He cuts, anticipates, and is brave enough to rub shoulders and get into close combat.
“He fought with Córdoba and then got into a tangle with Borja. A defender who defends by attacking, in each intervention he brings the team out from the back. At 26, he already shows the poise of a veteran, 9/10.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Less than halfway into his professional career, Romero is already a World Champion and a two-time Copa America winner. He is now undisputedly one of the biggest modern-day legends of Argentine football.
If Tottenham do demonstrate the capability of competing for major honours next season, the centre-back might well start thinking about making a move to one of the elite clubs in Europe.
