Sen. Menendez found guilty on corruption charges

A verdict has been reached in the federal corruption trial of Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), according to multiple reports: Menendez was found guilty.

Prosecutors accused him of accepting gold bars, cash and mortgage payments worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in a scheme that reached as far as the governments of Egypt and Qatar, ABC News reports.

On Tuesday, a jury found Menendez guilty of all counts that included conspiracy to commit bribery, actions to benefit Egypt, and conspiracy For a Public Official to Act as a Foreign Agent, reported NBC News' Steven Bognar.

Menendez responded to the guilty plea by throwing his face in his hands and shaking his head, CNN reported.

Nadine Menendez, his wife, was also charged but saw her trial postponed indefinitely due to a breast cancer diagnosis, reports show.

Both the New Jersey Democrat and his wife pleaded not guilty to all charges, court records show.

Co-defendants, New Jersey businessmen Wael Hana and Fred Daibes, were also found guilty on all the counts they faced, according to CNN.

New York federal prosecutors claimed Menendez, 70, "put his power up for sale" and received a Mercedes-Benz convertible an envelopes stuffed with cash in exchange.

They also allege Menendez's wife received her engagement ring as part of his bribery scheme.

Gold bars and more than $400,000 in cash were found hidden throughout his home by FBI agents, prosecutors said.

Menendez's attorneys argued in Manhattan federal court that the New Jersey senator was doing his duty and prosecutors presented "cherry-picked nonsense" that never proved he accepted bribes, ABC News reports.

Jury deliberations began on July 13.

The governmental watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington called on Menendez to resign his post.

"There is no room in the Senate for a convicted felon, especially not one convicted of taking bribes," they wrote on X. "He must resign today or be immediately expelled."
