Aldi gin named one of the best in the world and it’s available at a bargain price 50% less than top brands

A SUPERMARKET own-brand gin that is half the price of top rivals has been named “one of the best in the world”.

Haysmith’s, Aldi’s own-label gin brand, picked up gold at the Spirits Business Global Gin Masters – beating all its leading competitors.

Aldi’s Haysmith’s Seville orange and Persian lime gin won big at a prestigious awards

Haysmith’s gin lineup includes Seville Orange & Persian Lime Gin (£14.99), London Dry Gin (£15.99) and Haymith’s Premium Sloe Gin (£14.99) – all of which picked up the highest accolade at the ceremony.

The Spirits Business Global Gin Masters awards the finest gin brands in the world as leading spirit specialists in judge them in blind-tasting rounds.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, said: “To be the only retailer to have obtained medals within this prestigious competition, including three golds, is quite the achievement.

The gin brand’s famous Haymith’s Premium Sloe Gin previously won the Best in Country award and was crowned the Best in Britain within the flavoured Gin category.

The 70cl gin contains 40% alcohol and beats competitors including Tanqueray and Sipsmith on price.

Tanqueray’s bittersweet Flor de Sevilla gin costs a whopping £27 at Sainsbury’s – 46% less.

It’s also cheaper than Sipsmith’s zesty orange gin, which is priced at £30 in Waitrose. This is 50% more than Aldi’s own-brand gin.

Julie added: “This recognition shows we are producing world-class gins on par with premium brands for just a fraction of the price.”

Last year, Haysmith’s rhubarb and ginger gin was named the best in the world at the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC).

Judges praised Aldi’s bottle, describing it as “magnificently well balanced” with “rich flavours of mouth-watering rhubarb”.

In 2019, its Greyson’s Seville Orange and Persiawon the prestigious “masters” title at the Spirits Business Gin Masters Awards.

It cost £14.99 at the time too.

The prize-worthy gin came up on top despite being £10 cheaper than rival brand Tanqueray’s Flor de Sevilla Gin.

And in both 2017 and 2018, the supermarket’s £9.99 Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin became a sold-out sensation when it won top prize at the International Spirits Challenge (ISC) as well as the IWSC.

It beat brands such as Sipsmith, Beefeater and Gordon’s.

You can order Aldi’s gin online but you’ll need to click and collect – your nearest store will come up on the website’s store locator if you’re not sure.

The gin is available in all 1,000 supermarkets though, so you can also visit in person first if it’s easier.

However, if you enjoy an alcoholic drink once in a while, do make sure to still drink responsibly.

NHS guidelines on drinking alcohol

ACCORDING to the NHS, regularly drinking more than 14 units of alcohol a week risks damaging your health.

To keep health risks from alcohol to a low level if you drink most weeks:

  • men and women are advised not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis 
  • spread your drinking over 3 or more days if you regularly drink as much as 14 units a week
  • if you want to cut down, try to have several drink-free days each week

If you’re pregnant or think you could become pregnant, the safest approach is not to drink alcohol at all to keep risks to your baby to a minimum.
