Tottenham’s vice-captain and fan favourite, Cristian Romero, has his hands on another Copa America with Argentina and has been recorded as one of the best tacklers throughout the entire tournament.

Romero impressed at Tottenham again this season

Cristian Romero flew out of the blocks in 2023/24 under Ange Postecoglou, being named vice-captain alongside new singing, James Maddison, and repaying the new Australian manager’s faith with an equalising header on the Premier League’s opening day.

However, Tottenham and Romero’s sensational start to the season simultaneously came crumbling down in early November against Chelsea when the Argentine defender was dismissed in the 33rd minute for what was deemed by VAR a dangerous tackle on Enzo Fernandez.

Tottenham’s number seventeen eventually bounced back to form after his dismissal, ending the season with five goals to his name and plenty of appreciation from Spurs fans for his impressive displays against Arsenal and Crystal Palace, despite the rest of Romero’s team declining in performance. Romero barely put a foot wrong at Copa America

Romero has been at the centre of a golden generation of Argentinian football with La Albiceleste lifting the World Cup in Qatar back in December of 2022.

Argentina added to the nation’s swelling trophy cabinet on Sunday evening by securing back-to-back Copa Americas following victory against Davinson Sanchez’s Colombia in the final.

WhoScored on X tweeted that Spurs’ Cristian Romero recorded the highest tackle percentage across the entire tournament (96%) out of players who attempted ten or more tackles.

Romero only missed a single game of Argentina’s Copa America victory and it’s clear to see why Lionel Scaloni sticks by the centre-back with such impressive defensive stats.

Spurs Web opinion

The hope will now be that after such serial international success with Argentina, Romero can influence some of the younger Tottenham players with that winning mentality that appears to have eluded Spurs for over fifteen years now.

The statistic itself isn’t a surprise however, Romero in my opinion is one of the Premier League’s best defenders who showed signs of calming down his worrying disciplinary record towards the end of last season.

It’s inarguable in my mind that Romero will be key to any success Postecoglou and Tottenham may achieve in the coming seasons.
