Former President Trump will get a boost from former rivals as the GOP seeks to unite the party heading into the home stretch of the campaign.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will speak at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday night, putting aside their bitter primary challenges against Trump.

This comes a day after Trump tapped Ohio Sen. JD Vance, who once called him “a moral disaster,” to be his running mate.

The second night of the convention will feature a full roster of big name lawmakers, candidates, and former officials, including Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.), Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson.

The GOP will also look to showcase a more diverse and modern party, with speakers such as entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, reality TV star Savannah Chrisley, and Potawatomi Nation chair James Crawford.

The theme for the night will focus on crime, immigration and safety. There will be six “everyday Americans" who will speak on how those issues impacted their lives.

The first night of the GOP convention was at times emotional, as Trump appeared with a bandaged ear after surviving an assassination attempt over the weekend.

The GOP is seeking to expand its coalition by putting forward new faces such as entrepreneur Amber Rose and Teamsters President Sean O'Brien.

Digging Deeper:

Rose has more than 24 million Instagram followers, and she founded the “SlutWalk” at the height of the Me Too movement.

• Rose said she was misled by the media to believe Trump was a racist. She now says Trump gives Americans “the best chance we have to give our babies a better life.”
  
  
• CNN analyst Van Jones said the speech was a “bunker buster” for Democrats, who need to maintain their multi-cultural alliance to win. “That is a young woman of color. She is describing the experience that a lot of people have — feeling that maybe, if you’re around too many liberals, you might get criticized too much or you might not be able to speak your mind, and she spoke to it really well.”
  
  

O’Brien, the Teamsters president, did not endorse Trump, but he wanted to speak at the GOP convention to fully represent the diverse views of his union members.

• O’Brien gave an impassioned speech calling for “corporate welfare reform.” He hammered companies like Amazon, Uber, Lyft and Walmart that “take zero responsibilities for the workers they employ.”
  
  
• Republicans have historically been the party of big business, but the winds are shifting. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) wrote a new op-ed calling on Republicans to open up to Labor: “There was a time when Republicans knew that American strength depends squarely on American workers—and their way of life: family, neighborhood, church, union hall.”
  
  
• O’Brien also asked to speak at the Democratic convention, but he hasn’t heard back yet. The Teamsters may not endorse anyone this cycle, which would be a blow to President Biden. O’Brien on Tuesday called Biden “the most pro-labor president we've ever seen."

In another sign of the shifting political alliances, Vance told The New York Times's Ross Douthat in an interview that he’s open to the politics espoused by “Bernie Bros.”

The first Trump-Vance rally will take place Saturday in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is moving ahead with plans to virtually nominate President Biden weeks ahead of the party's convention, drastically shortening the timeline for Democrats who want to run a different candidate.

• The virtual nomination is expected to take place between July 29 and Aug. 6.
  
  
• The Democratic National Convention begins Aug. 19 in Chicago.

The DNC originally planned the virtual nomination because the convention didn’t meet an Ohio deadline to get Biden on the ballot by Aug. 7. But Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) signed legislation on June 2 extending the deadline to accommodate Democrats, and since then many Democrats have called on Biden to step aside.

House Democrats are furious at the DNC's plans and are circulating a letter warning them not to move forward:

“There is no legal justification for this extraordinary and unprecedented action, which would effectively accelerate the nomination process by nearly a month...Proceeding with the ‘virtual roll call’ in the absence of a valid legal rationale will be rightly perceived as a purely political maneuver, which we believe would be counterproductive and undermine party unity and cohesion.”

There have not been any new public calls from Democrats for Biden to drop out since the assassination attempt against Trump.

But privately, Democrats are scheming around alternatives.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) was asked by WPRI News if Biden should stay in the race.

"I think that's a project that is still being considered between House leadership, Democratic leadership and the President and his team. And I don't think there’s an answer for it yet.”

The New York Times reports that Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), who is running for Senate, told donors at a private meeting over the weekend that Democrats will lose the White House, the Senate, and fail to reclaim the House if Biden remains the nominee.

“I think if he is our nominee, I think we lose.”

Biden remains adamant he’ll be the nominee, and he’s frustrated by all of the questions surrounding his candidacy.

In an interview with NBC, the president scolded Lester Holt for asking about his mental capacity and calls for him to drop out.

“Sometime come and talk to me about what we should be talking about, OK? The issues.”

The interview did little to calm the nerves of Democrats who don’t believe Biden can effectively prosecute the party’s case against Trump.

The Secret Service is under intense pressure to explain the security failures that led up to the assassination attempt against former President Trump.

In an interview with CBS, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle called the shooting “unacceptable,” but she said she would not resign.

Cheatle will be grilled by a Congressional panel Monday, where she’ll almost certainly have to answer for why the rooftop the gunman shot from was not secured. This was her answer to ABC:

“That building in particular has a sloped roof at its highest point. And so, you know, there's a safety factor that would be considered there that we wouldn't want to put somebody up on a sloped roof.”

CBS reports that there were three snipers stationed inside the building that Matthew Thomas Crooks scaled and shot from.

A major pro-Trump super PAC called MAGA Inc. says it raised more than $50 million on the opening day of the Republican National Convention.

And that’s not all...

• The Wall Street Journal reports that Elon Musk plans to give $45 million a month between now and Election Day to a new super PAC supporting Trump. Palantir Technologies co-founder Joe Lonsdale and the Winklevoss twins will also donate to the new group.
• Axios reports that tech investors Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz will donate to Trump.

• A new Virginia Commonwealth University-Wilder School poll finds Trump leading Biden by 3 points in Virginia. No Republican has carried Virginia in 20 years.
• The Biden campaign is touting the 538 election model, which shows Biden as the slight favorite. The model aggregates polls, which show Trump in the lead, but it also includes data points that tip in Biden's favor. The model is an outlier, so 538's editorial director explained some confusion around around it here.
