The Taliban Statistics and Information Office has announced the opening of electronic ID distribution centers in Pakistan, Iran, and Turkey.

The spokesperson of this office stated on Tuesday that a team from Kabul recently traveled to the United Arab Emirates for electronic ID distribution.

On Sunday, July 14th, the Taliban Statistics and Information Office declared that an electronic ID distribution center had commenced operations in the United Arab Emirates to facilitate Afghan residents there.

Following the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021, the issuance of electronic ID cards and passports at many Afghanistan diplomatic missions abroad had been halted.

Mohammad Haleem Rafi, spokesperson for the Statistics Office, told state radio and television that currently, 78 electronic ID distribution centers are active across Afghanistan.

These efforts by the Taliban to reopen electronic ID distribution centers in neighboring countries and beyond come amid continued non-recognition of the Taliban regime by the international community. Most countries have refrained from officially recognizing the Taliban government since its assumption of power in 2021.

However, there have been exceptions, such as the reopening of embassies by Iran, Pakistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, China, and Russia in Kabul, indicating nuanced diplomatic engagements despite broader reservations.

The international community’s stance remains crucial in influencing the trajectory of Afghanistan’s domestic policies and its relations with the global community amidst complex geopolitical dynamics and humanitarian and human rights concerns.
