Red Sox Select D’Angelo Ortiz, Son Of David, In 2024 MLB Draft

The Red Sox called a familiar name when making the No. 567 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft.

D’Angelo Ortiz can once again call Boston home.

Ortiz, a utility fielder out of Miami Dade Community College, was selected in the 19th round by the Red Sox — the same organization his father, David, helped win three World Series during his Hall of Fame career.

It was Boston’s penultimate pick in the draft.

D’Angelo Ortiz might look like his dad, but he doesn’t play like him. The 20-year-old hits for average, slashing .325/.426/.350 from the right side across two seasons with the Brockton Rox of the Future Collegiate Baseball League. It was in Brockton that he played alongside second-generation ballplayers Manny Ramirez Jr., Pedro Martinez Jr., Kade Foulke (Keith Foulke) and Jaden Sheffield (Gary Sheffield).

D’Angelo penned a letter, through NESN, to his father after he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022.
