Water is flowing again at Portland’s iconic Ira Keller Fountain

The Ira Keller Fountain in downtown Portland has been reactivated after a year of repairs to its internal pump system, allowing locals to once again enjoy the iconic water feature during the summer months.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Water is once again flowing at the Ira Keller Fountain, one of downtown Portland’s most recognizable landmarks, after running dry for more than a year.

The historic fountain’s pump broke in May 2023 and prompted the Portland Water Bureau to undertake major repairs to its internal pump system. But as of Tuesday afternoon, the installation is complete.

“We are delighted to see the iconic fountain reactivated for the height of summer,” Portland Parks and Recreation spokesperson Mark Ross said.

The water feature holds a special place in city history and provides a unique space for local families to gather and cool off during warm, sunny days. It is typically turned off during the winter, but gets turned on by the time city-wide festivities like Fleet Week and Rose Festival take place downtown.
