Is a food pantry coming to St. Martinville?

ST. MARTIN PARISH, La. (KLFY) --- After moving to St. Martinville from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Barbara Pitz has a desire to help the community; now she looks to start a food pantry for those in need.

"We're pretty much just trying to give people the opportunity to bring food into their homes because it's hard," Pitz said.

Pitz saw the need for a pantry when she moved to Acadiana in March 2023. She said she noticed other communities have successful pantries residents can depend on and wants to bring that to St. Martinville.

"I see what Lafayette does, what Carencro does with their pantries that they have in the area," Pitz said. "I notice St. Martinville doesn't have one. I figured I could fill the need since there is one and see what I could do with it."

Pitz said she saw a lot of community work in her hometown and believes her life has guided her to Acadiana to be of service to the community.

"I've been trying to follow what God has been telling me to do, and I've been led here," Pitz said. "I just see how much of a need St. Martinville has. I haven't done it before, but I can't. I can't do anything worse."

Pitz said the pantry is still in its early development, but knows it can absolutely make an impact in the community once it officially opens up.
