Inclusive summer activities in full swing at Santa Fe Family Life Center

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Summer programs at the Santa Fe Family Life Center are in full swing, giving children an opportunity to play sports despite disabilities. However, that's not all the fitness center offers.

"It's very fun," said Savina Muse.

Muse, 14, is participating in Wheelie Camp at the Santa Fe Family Life Center. They've been playing sports, working out, and doing art projects. Tuesday was wheelchair basketball.

"I keep losing my shoe," said Muse. "My nickname's 'Cinderella.'"

Some children have physical disabilities. Others have disabilities you can't see.

Max Beasley, 8, has Spina Bifida, Arnold Chari Malformation Type 2 and Hydrocephalus. He doesn't let that stop him.

"Earlier you told me you were strong, how strong are you?" asked News 4.

"Like, very strong," said Beasley.

Beasley was at camp with his brother, who does not use a wheelchair. Coach Tim Eldridge said that's what this camp is all about.

"Just gives the kids a safe place to go where they can be around other kids with disabilities so that they don't feel like they're the odd person out," said Eldridge.

"Parents may have a kid that does have a disability, their siblings are able to come along with them and join in, take the class with them," said Bryan Jackson, the executive director of the SFFLC.

Jackson said the non-profit's slogan is "A facility for every ability."

"Our mission is to give back to those individuals with disabilities and under served youth in the communities," said Jackson.

The facility has unique and adaptive equipment other gyms may not have, along with basketball, tennis, and pickle ball courts, fitness and weight rooms, and of course a pool.

"You name it, we probably have it here at Santa Fe," said Jackson.

All of those facilities come in handy while partnering with community organizations.

SFFLC strives to be inclusive. For those who can't afford a membership, they offer scholarships or discounts based on need.

"We do something that no one else is providing anywhere in Oklahoma City," said Jackson.

Allowing members to defy the odds.

"When things happen to you, you told what you can't do. And it's all about chipping away at that list and saying, 'No, I can,'" said Coach Eldridge.
