Eight fire engines raced to reports of a “chemical incident” in the block at 12.35am this morning.

Firefighters remain on the scene more than six hours later, a spokesperson said.

One man from a first-floor flat has been taken to hospital by ambulance.

Three other residents are being treated at the scene by emergency services.

The London Fire Brigade said it does not yet know the cause of the incident.

Crews scrambled to the scene from fire stations as far afield as Euston in north London and Bethnal Green in the East End.

Station Commander Graham Crow said: “This is a protracted incident and crews will be remaining on scene for several hours.

“Motorists are advised to avoid the area to avoid traffic congestion.”

The residential road closed after fire crews arrived but has now re-opened to traffic.
