Storms cause damage across the Capital Region

As storms blew through the Capital Region on Tuesday, widespread damage was left behind.

CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- As storms blew through the Capital Region on Tuesday, widespread damage was left behind.

In Rotterdam, two large trees came toppling down. The homeowner was grateful they missed his house and cars.

“We were really concerned because this tree is actually rotted,” Kevin O'Flaherty said.

O'Flaherty said he's lived in the Northeast his entire life and never saw a storm like this.

“When I open the garage door and immediately lost power, I saw that tree fall again," he said. "Picked up my phone, called my buddy, the second tree just toppled over, really powerful wind.”

His friend is Terry Mudge with Catskill Tree Service. He said tree removal can be expensive if you don't have homeowners' insurance.

“I try to work with a customer as it happens a lot more than you think," he said. "We try to work for them but it's still a lot of money to get it taken off the house and get it cleaned up.”

Barbara and Robet Nellis have lived in their Gloversville home for over 30 years.

“All of a sudden, we heard 'crash,' the sound of just like an airplane coming down, and then it exploded. Two trees fell out back. It fell onto the house, fell into the neighbor's garage. There is a hole in the back side room with water coming down in it."

They told NEWS10 it was not the first time a tree came down on their home this year.

“One come down on the back a couple of months ago, and it took part of the shed down. From the other storm, it was a big storm.”

They think the storms are getting worse.

"It's been increasing in time, yes, they were mild before.”

NEWS10 meteorologists said a gust of wind over 70 MPH was recorded in Edinburgh, close to the Nellis's home.
