Man Utd legend Dwight Yorke lined up for shock international management role after previous boss resigned

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Dwight Yorke has reportedly been lined up as the new boss of Jamaica’s national team.

The former Trinidad and Tobago striker, 52, has only had a brief experience in the dugout as manager of Australian minnows Macarthur FC.

Yorke lasted just six months Down Under following a glittering playing career.

But he now looks set for a return to the training ground with Jamaica.

The Reggae Boyz have just parted ways with Heimir Hallgrimsson, who resigned after his side were dumped out of the Copa America in the group stage.

He has since become the new boss of the Republic of Ireland.

And the Mirror claims that has opened the door for Yorke to take charge of Jamaica.

The country’s Football Federation (JFF) are said to want a high-profile name who can convince eligible top talent to represent them.

Former United star Yorke certainly fits the bill, having scored 217 career goals while winning three Premier League titles, an FA Cup and the Champions League.

Jamaica are said to be eyeing several young English talents, with Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White and Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey in their sights.

They also hope to convince Hull star Jaden Philogene – on the brink of re-joining Villa – to pledge his international future to Jamaica.

And Yorke’s potential appointment could also heal the rift between the JFF and star player Leon Bailey.

The Villa winger has taken a “break” from the national side.

And he missed the disastrous Copa America campaign after falling out with chiefs over the national team’s structure.

But Yorke is not the only manager in the frame, with Jamaica reportedly receiving 40 applications from around the globe.

They will now look to appoint a new boss ahead of September’s Concacaf Nations League matches against Cuba and Honduras.

General Secretary Dennis Chung said: “We’re much closer to identifying someone. I know that we’ve had a lot of interest from around the world.

“People want to come and coach Jamaica because you saw how we performed at the Copa.

“We’re definitely going to the World Cup if we continue to play like that, and coaches want to go to the World Cup.”

Yorke will feel he is the right candidate should he be interested.

He previously said: “I’ve spent time with the likes of Pep Guardiola, Sir Alex Ferguson, Steve McLaren and Arsene Wenger.

“They will tell you: everyone wants to play attacking, front-foot football. I love that, being an attacker myself.

“You want to just score goals. But there is a balance here. If you don’t have good structure and a good system in place, then you are always likely to struggle.”
