Oh wow, SLO CAL! – The Monthly Traveler

Ah, my fellow adventurers, welcome back! For those of you who joined us on our last thrilling escapade to Pismo Beach, get ready for another exhilarating journey. This time, we’re setting our compass towards the captivating enclave of San Luis Obispo.

Nestled halfway between the bustling metropolises of Los Angeles and San Francisco, San Luis Obispo is more than just a pit stop along the Pacific Coast Highway. It’s a destination brimming with charm, adventure, and a rich tapestry of history waiting to be discovered.

Before we get going, let’s rewind the clock and delve into the colorful history of San Luis Obispo. Picture this: a sun-soaked land founded back in 1772 by none other than the Spanish Franciscan Junípero Serra. This picturesque town, named after Saint Louis, the Bishop of Toulouse, began as a humble mission outpost. Fast forward through the years, and San Luis Obispo has morphed from a Spanish mission to a Mexican pueblo, before finally donning its American hat in 1850, when California officially joined the Union.

But hold onto your sunhats, folks, because the journey doesn’t stop there. This town is like a living, breathing time capsule, where every cobblestone street whispers tales of its past. Picture yourself wandering through streets lined with Spanish colonial architecture, stumbling upon adobes that have stood the test of time, and soaking in the charm of a downtown bustling with life.
