I assumed my friend’s child ‘Vi’ was short for ‘Violet’ – I was stunned when I found out the true origin

PICKING a name for your child can be tricky – and sometimes parents go for something a little left-field for their choice.

One person shared they were left in shock after realising the real name of their friend’s child Vi.

Taking to Reddit they shared their name surprise, and people didn’t hold back with their views on the unusual moniker.

They shared: “Just found out this kid’s real name…. Yikes

“A friend of a friend has 5-ish year old girl.

“I heard them call her Vi as a nickname and figured it was short for Violet.

“Just found out it’s short for Viper.”

While it hasn’t been confirmed if this is actually their legal name, many people were quick to share their opinion on a child being called Viper.

One baffled person wrote: “I vish to vipe and vash your vindows.”

A second added: “Yeah this reminds of the daughter of a girl I know.

“They call her Sav or Savvy so I thought her name was Savannah. Nope, her name is Savage.”

However, some people defended the choice.

One Reddit user wrote: “I think Viper is a pretty badass name.”

Another person has revealed her shock when she learned what a classmate’s name stood for.

She explained that it was the “trashiest” name she’d ever heard.

Sierra (@sierrasparklet) shared the name discovery in a TikTok video.

She explained that back when she was in junior high, she had a classmate who went by her initials, CJ.

Sierra had transferred into the school district partway through seventh grade and therefore didn’t know what the girl’s name stood for.

Are Unique Baby Names Worth The Hassle?

Fabulous' Deputy Editor reveals the turmoil she faced with her own name while growing up.

When I was a child, all I wanted was one of those personalised keyrings with my name on it.

But no joy, the closest I could find was Rosie, Joseph (not great for a little girl) and Joanne.

Josie is short for Josephine, which is a French name, and I managed to reach my 20s without ever meeting anyone who shared it.

When I try to introduce myself to people, I get all sorts of random things – like Tracey and Stacey – which can be pretty annoying.

Although I have come into contact with a couple of Josies over the last year – there seems to be a few of us around my age – it’s still a much rarer name than most of my friends have.

On the whole I don’t mind it, at least it’s not rude or crazily spelt.

And it means I can get away with ‘doing a Cheryl’ and just referring to myself as Josie.

I’m getting married this year and some friends are shocked that I’m changing my surname, as it’s not seen as very cool or feminist to do so these days, but I explain to them that I’m not that attached to Griffiths as I’d always just say ‘hi it’s Josie’ when ringing a mate up.

I think it’s nice to be unique and I’ll definitely try and replicate this when naming my own kids.

It’s the rude names you’ve got to watch out for, so after nine years as a lifestyle journalist I’ll definitely be avoiding those.

One day, during gym class, she heard the girl’s full name.

“I finally heard her full name, which was Cobra Jem,” she said.

“I asked her about it. She let me know she hated it and please do not call her by that.”

Her classmate explained that she wanted to be known as CJ and that as soon as she was able, she’d request a name change.

Her parents, she revealed, had decided her name as teens in the 80s.

They had named her after their favourite television shows, which happened to be Jem and the Holograms and G.I. Joe.

COBRA, a fictional terrorist organisation, had been the main antagonist of the show G. I. Joe.

To this day, Sierra wonders if her classmate ever got the name change she desired.

While she supplied the name as her answer to the “trashiest” name she’d ever heard, some didn’t think it was too bad.

“Cobra Jem? I honestly love that, I’m not gonna lie,” said one commenter.

“I love it too, as an adult, where I can own it. But it’d probably be pretty hard to live with as a kid,” said another.
