Nicosia’s summer festival is back

Here to add to Nicosia’s nightlife scene is the Summer Nights 2024, an annual festival organised by the Municipality of Nicosia. Running from July to September, the festival will fill Nicosia with free performances of music, theatre and dance – all in the heart of the city.

Concerts featuring Greek music, strolls through pedestrian streets, theatrical performances, traditional songs and dances from Cyprus, Asia Minor, Constantinople and the Aegean islands will refresh the hot summer evenings in the city. The events will take place at Eleftheria, Faneromeni, Pallouriotissa and Agioi Omologites Squares, providing the audience with evenings of relaxation and entertainment, while also giving local artists, both old and new, the opportunity to showcase their work.

After an opening music act in mid-July, the next performance will be held on July 29 at Pallouriotissa Square with a folk music tribute to Greek music. On the following evening a Cypriot comedy by Satiriko Theatre will be presented at the amphitheatre of Eleftheria Square at 8.30pm.

On August 2, another comic play in Greek will be put on at the amphitheatre by the Theatre of Laughter. A short break will follow for the August holidays and events will resume on August 27 with a music performance at Eleftheria Square dedicated to Greek folk song.

On September 11, an artistic ensemble of Giorgos Kalogirou, Katerina Paraschou, Andreas Elesnitsalis, and Paris Paraschou will perform the concert Songs of Tranquillity featuring songs of Greece’s New Wave.

Ten days later, a march and a special event will take place within the framework of World Alzheimer’s Day, organised by the Ithaki Association. The march on September 21 will set off from Eleftheria Square at 11am to Faneromeni Square accompanied by the Cyprus Police Philharmonic band. At 11.30am a prayer will be held for the health of patients and relatives of dementia sufferers, followed by a bazaar, music and games at Faneromeni Square.

The last scheduled event of the festival will take visitors to another charming Nicosia location – the Ayioi Omologites neighbourhood. Held at the church square, a music and dance performance with traditional music and dances from Cyprus, Asia Minor, Constantinople and the Aegean islands will be held at 8pm, performed by the Cultural Workshop of Agioi Omologites, wrapping up another edition of the summer festival.
