Mount Cinnamon Beach Resort is taking its commitment to sustainability to the next level by joining the United Nations Global Compact Network as the first Caribbean member in the Travel & Leisure sector.
The authentic Caribbean boutique hotel with 36 hillside suites and villas above Grand Anse Beach, Grenada is known for its sustainability efforts through its Green Globe certification and support of Grenadian skills development via its association with the West Indies School of Hospitality (WISH).
This latest commitment will see the resort pledge to maintaining its current sustainability practices, as well as follow the United National Global Compact Network’s 10 guiding principles. Mount Cinnamon’s owner Barry Collymore will also attend the leadership summit in New York in September, where businesses will network and share best practices.

“The future of the Caribbean hotel and tourism industry is predicated on a stable environment. The Caribbean is one of the most environmentally dependent regions as tourism requires a few fundamentals; sunny high seasons, very little to no beach erosion, clean air, adequate supply of water for drinking and leisure, and enough rain to sustain flora and fauna but not cause too much interruption to leisure. It is important now that every member of the hotel sector not only recognises how important our climate is but is also committed to and united in taking action to protect the environment. Mount Cinnamon recognises and respects the United Nations Global Compact’s ten principles and our environmental commitment, as well as our commitment to the development of human capital through WISH are just a couple of examples of our engagement in these principles.”
The United Nations Global Compact is the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative that focuses on engaging companies in sustainability efforts through local programmes in over 75 countries. The aim is to align corporate strategies and operations with ten universally accepted principles on human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption to deliver measurable impact to the world’s most pressing challenges.

Mount Cinnamon Beach Resort is celebrating 10 years as a Green Globe certified resort later this year, an accreditation which recognises sustainable operation and management of travel and tourism businesses worldwide. The hotel has an Environmental Officer who has responsibility for overseeing the Sustainability Management Plan, which includes ensuring ongoing environmental performance, identification of environmental risks, recording and monitoring of impacts and implementing environmental and social sustainability measures. Special consideration is given to employing and empowering local employees.
Barry Collymore is also the co-founder of the West Indies School of Hospitality (WISH), which aims to create learning paths for Caribbean people in the Hospitality and Service Industries to create a more empowered, confident, and efficient workforce, and in turn a more competitive Caribbean destination. In 2023, WISH achieved a target of training 2,000 Grenadians in various hospitality fields. The 2023 partnership with The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) allowed WISH to provide career and work force development strategies to the culinary teams in restaurants and resorts throughout the island of Grenada. Through a tiered approach, the CIA provides mentor training to the culinary leadership of WISH, who then cascade the training through to their respective teams across the island.
