‘Slight improvement’ to conscript’s condition

The 17-year-old conscript taken to France for care after he lost consciousness during national guard training last week is slightly improving though still in critical condition, Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas said on Wednesday.

“The last briefing I had was last night, there is a slight improvement in his health condition, though he continues to be in critical condition and is being treated in intensive care at a specialised centre which is monitoring him closely and giving him the necessary treatment.”

Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting, he expressed the hope that there would be better news soon.

Palmas wished the 17-year-old’s family strength during this time and clarified the costs of the transfer of the conscript and his mother to France were covered by the health ministry.

The cost of travel of the young man’s father and sister were covered by the defence ministry.

Responding to a question, Palmas specified that procedures specify the state covers accommodation expenses for one person accompanying the patient.

“I believe the financial aspect is one of the smaller issues. We hope the young man gets better.”
