‘Real reason’ Maya Jama and Stormzy split ‘revealed’ as couple ‘clashed over their future together’
MAYA Jama and Stormzy split-up after disagreements over when to start a family, according to reports.
The superstar couple shocked fans today when they released a joint statement announcing their separation – just a year after rekindling their relationship after a four-year break.
The pair insist they remain good friends after spending 12 months trying, but ultimately failing, to make things work romantically.
A source has now told the Mail: “Maya and Stormzy are very much on different pages when it comes to their future.
“Stormzy was keen to settle down and start a family whereas Maya is enjoying her career, she’s ambitious, and wants to prioritise achieving everything she possibly can.
“She also loves travelling and partying. At 29 she’s not ready for the next chapter just yet.”
There was no indication of relationship issues when the pair put on a united front at the Formula 1 British Grand Prix just weeks ago.
Maya, 29, and Stormzy, 30, were pictured hand in hand ahead of his headline performance at Silverstone.
Prior to that they were seen soaking up the festival atmosphere at a sunny Glastonbury.
However, they attended Wimbledon separately last week, perhaps the first real sign they were no longer a unit.
Their statement reads: “We’ve been laughing whilst drafting this because we never, ever, in a million years thought we’d be the couple announcing a breakup, but for the sake of clarity and, more importantly, to allow us the space and grace that’s needed for us both to be able to navigate this next bit of our lives with peace, we thought it might be best to.”
Describing their love story, they wrote: “We fell madly in love in 2014, broke up in 2019, and then spent five years manoeuvring life apart.”
During that break-up, Maya dated and got engaged to basketball star Ben Simmons and regularly visited him in the States.
But the romance would be short-lived, with the pair ended things in August 2022 – a year before Stormzy would recapture her heart.
We exclusively told how the pair reunited when they were pictured holding hands in Greece and on a date night in London.
The statement continued: “We decided to try for the final time in August 2023, and we’ve spent this past year trying our best to make it work; however, we recently decided to call it quits.
“We were 21 and 20 when we first met-both at the beginning of our careers-and spent five years growing together and then five years growing separately.
“So this final attempt required a whole lot of figuring out, relearning, and We still think the absolute world of each other, we still care and respect each other, we are still grateful for the time we’ve had together, and we are still friends and will always be friends (so if you see us having a lil catch-up at The Brits or something, don’t cause a fuss, we are dawgs!).
“Love you guys and thank you for all the love you’ve showered us with, it’s been beautiful! Mike & M x”
It was just last month that fans were speculating they had secretly got engaged after they shared a series of romantic snaps from a trip to Paris in which they kissed on a balcony.
ROCKY ROMANCE
Stormzy first got together with Maya in 2015. The following year he wrote the song Birthday Girl about Maya back in 2016 and she even appeared in the music video.
In 2017, the rap king revealed to The Mirror that he had been thinking about proposing to Maya.
He said: “I’m still so young but I want to propose, it’s going to happen and I will do it right. She is the best.”
It was three years into their relationship that Stormzy‘s music career took off and he quickly became grime’s poster boy.
In 2019 fans were left heartbroken as the two abruptly split after four years together.
Their break-up inspired the musician to write the heartfelt song Lessons in which he admits he had “done the dirt”.
The lyrics also include “the greatest love I ever knew” and “it’s too hard to forgive”.
Maya’s star has also soared in recent years with her becoming a regular in high fashion circles and landing big deals with the likes of makeup brand Rimmel.
She addressed their reunion earlier this year on Love Island spin-off Aftersun, admitting she wasn’t sure about getting back together at first.
She said: “I mean I can relate, I had a lot of people saying I should get back with my ex and sometimes it is just not what you’re ready for.”
