Courtney Williams might want to walk back her bet on Kayla McBride to win the WNBA 3-point contest

Ummm... I don't think that's allowed, Courtney.

Courtney Williams is a good teammate, and she wants us to know she’s a good teammate. I know she wants us to know she’s a good teammate because she tweeted a message in support of another teammate Tuesday. That’s what good teammates do.

And now that we know she’s a good teammate, she should probably delete the tweet. Just a little friendly advice from someone who would love to have Courtney Williams as a teammate.

The tweet in question was a response to the news that Minnesota Lynx guard Kayla McBride will be participating in the WNBA 3-point contest Friday. Feeling good about her teammate’s chances to win, Williams issued a challenge to any doubters: “Who wanna bet sum? I got whatever on Mac.”

Sorry, Courtney. You can’t do that.

WNBA players are subject to the same rules on sports betting as the NBA which, according to ESPN, prohibits players from any kind of betting on the league or its properties — which includes the WNBA. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that includes all-star events.

If we’re being honest here, Williams likely issued the challenge in jest. Again, a show of support for her teammate. At the same time, in light of recent betting scandals in sports — including the one involving Jontay Porter in the NBA — it’s probably not the type of thing the league wants taken lightly.

OK. Now that we’re done with technicalities, can I tell you a secret?

*Whispers* McBride is a really good bet to win … even without knowing who she’ll be competing against.

Top 10 in all-time three-pointers made, McBride is shooting 42.4% from three this season, which is fourth-best among players with at least 75 attempts. And she’s the only player in the WNBA with at least 60 made threes while shooting 40% or better.

This will be her third 3-point contest after previously competing in 2018 and 2019.
