There were five matches, including England’s victories over Slovakia and Switzerland, that went to extra time at the tournament.

But only twice did a team score before it went to a shoot-out.

Harry Kane’s matchwinner over Slovakia was one.

And Mikel Merino’s late effort for Spain against Germany to dump out the hosts was the other.

That meant that we had three penalty shootouts – and Neville wants to see more.

The 49-year-old was asked on the latest episode of The Overlap, brought to you by SkyBet, about what changes he would like to see.

And Neville wasted no time in giving his response, saying: “I do like the idea of getting rid of extra-time.

“I think it’s been a disappointment in extra-time.”

The former full-back, who won 85 England caps, was joined by fellow legendary pundits Roy Keane, Ian Wright and Jill Scott.

And Arsenal icon Wright asked: “What would you do, go straight to penalties after the game?”

Neville replied: “Yeah. Force the result.

“It’s worked, actually, I think domestically in the Carabao Cup.”

Scott, Keane, Wright and Neville then debated it before Keane concluded: “Just have the extra time, just bring it down to ten minutes each way.”

Neville then said: “It feels like my career went a lot to extra time because out of the eight tournaments I was at, I think seven games out of eight tournaments went to extra time.

“It just felt like extra time was a large part of my career just because of England – it wasn’t a lot of times but it just felt like it.”
