BLOG: Hillsborough Law means campaigners long fight for the truth was not in vain

Liverpool City Council Leader, Cllr Liam Robinson, reflects on the Hillsborough Law being included in the King’s Speech, meaning it will become law in the near future…

Today’s news that the Hillsborough Law is going to be on the statute books marks a watershed moment for our city and this country.

It is a significant victory for the families of those who lost their lives in 1989 and whose fight for justice was thwarted for decades by those in authority who tried to cover up the truth.

The Hillsborough Law is designed to make sure that ordinary people are able to take on those in authority when they fail in their duty.

It will criminalise lying to the British public, and support those fighting for the truth – rebalancing the scales of justice in this country.

It is an important step forward in making sure that public organisations are truly accountable for their actions, and do not take part in cover ups and concealment.

We owe a great deal of thanks to those who lobbied and campaigned so hard for this.

That is why, at the next Council Meeting on 24 July, I have put forward a motion placing on record our thanks for the decades of dedication, courage and solidarity shown by the Hillsborough families, survivors, campaigners and the citizens of Liverpool.

Let us not forget that, without their strength and conviction, the truth would never have come to light.

Their determination will prevent others from going through the struggles that they did, and will mean that their long fight for the truth was not in vain.
